Dorothy Bland, the dean of the Mayborn School of Journalism, confirmed to the North Texas Daily Friday afternoon she will not be seeking renewal for the position at the end of the spring semester.

Bland joined the faculty in 2013 after serving as the director of the Division of Journalism at Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication. She replaced M. Jean Keller, who had served as the Mayborn’s acting dean since 2012.

The Mayborn, which is now one of only 111 programs within the United States and outside the country accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, saw its enrollment rise more than 25 percent from 2013 to 2016 under Bland.

Bland said she plans to remain at UNT as a professor after stepping down at the end of the semester.

“I am planning to teach, do some research service and other initiatives,” Bland said. “I’ve made the decision — I feel good about the work that’s been done.”

Search her on Youtube. Faked a racial incident. The woman should not be allowed to teach journalism, period. Thank goodness for dashcams.

      Yes, faked a racial incident.
Tried to get two decent police officers in trouble, and inflame racial hatreds.
      What a pathetic, nasty person.

I just saw the video. So shameful. What she did was a disgrace and she should have resigned. I can only imagine the hate that she is inciting among her students. What a shame.
BTW, I am black myself and have been stopped by police. Fortunately, they were almost always very cordial. Never crossed my mind to lie about these encounters.

Dr. Bland did not inflame any type of incident. If there were a different complexion walking with a hoodie, ankle weights, and leggings – they would have automatically been considered a normal citizen going about their daily routine. STOP REACHING for reasons to take this women and diminish her title she worked for.

She was considered a normal citizen, you are unable to tell the race from behind when they got out of the car. After that they asked for ID because she did break the law in Texas Title 7, subtitle C, Chapter 552 of the Texas Transportation Code:Sec. 552.006. USE OF SIDEWALK. (a) A pedestrian may not walk along and on a roadway if an adjacent sidewalk is provided and is accessible to the pedestrian.(b) If a sidewalk is not provided, a pedestrian walking along and on a highway shall if possible walk on:(1) the left side of the roadway; or(2) the shoulder of the highway facing oncoming traffic. Cops were just doing their job.

Ms Bland does not have a Doctorate Degree. Therefore, she is not a “Dr” – she only has her Masters Degree. Yes, it is unusual to be the Dean of a Department without a PhD.

She was walking away from them with a hood up so they would have had no idea about her ‘complexion’ before stopping her. And what part of a ‘normal citizen’s’ day involves walking down the road (when a perfectly good and empty sidewalk was available) flapping their arms up and down?

This woman has no business teaching anyone anything about journalism. Period. Shame on UNT for allowing her to even receive a paycheck from Texas Tax Payers.

I’d love to hear one of her lectures on racial profiling and journalism. Did she ever give a reason for lying about two very cordial officers who could have lost jobs but for dash cams?
