Music pulsates through the bar, neon lights flash across dancing bodies and a woman paints on stage.

Subsonic Indulgence is a weekly dance music event put together by the Denton Dance Collective every Thursday at Andy’s Basement Bar & Grill.

“First and foremost we’re a DJ crew,” said Chase Dugger, one of the founders of Denton Dance Collective and a philosophy senior. “It’s a collection of Denton electronic music fans and is an emerging electronic community.”

The collective was founded by Dugger, UNT alumnus Eric Arnold, computer science senior Jeremy Doss and audiology junior Brittani Darlington.

Their DJ names are Spacechase, I Am Prometheus, Betamaxx and Max Capacitor, respectively.

Dugger said the collective started as merely a Facebook group but grew from there and continues to be a large part of what they are as a collective.

The group currently has more than 1,400 members on Facebook.

“Just by coming out you should feel like you’re apart of the collective,” Dugger said.

Texas Women’s University student Madelyn Blair said she attends Subsonic Indulgence often and feels the sense of community.

“It’s like a family almost,” she said. “Everybody’s really good friends with each other and we always try and support each other.”

Blair said she is also attracted to the Denton Dance Collective because it offers a new scene Denton doesn’t have an abundance of.

“You don’t really find this kind of music everywhere in Denton,” she said. “A lot of Denton, you have punk bands, a lot of indie bands.”

Painting sophomore Rezin Shelton said that Dugger invited him to a show and he eventually became an active member.

“This is a place that I can feel comfortable with and the music’s awesome,” Shelton said. “As soon as I came here I felt connected with everybody I met.”

Shelton said that acceptance is the greatest part of the collective.

“Denton in general is just very free,” Shelton said. “People are very open. You can be whatever you want to be.”
