Starting next year, President Obama plans to change the FAFSA application process, letting college students fill out their FAFSA in October instead of January, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Monday.

“Learning about their aid options much earlier in the college application’s selection process will allow families to calculate the true cost of attending college and make even better decisions,” Earnest said in the release. “Moving up the timing of the FAFSA will also make applying for aid easier, and more families will be able to access tax data for their applications.”

Obama announced the new plan during an appearance at a town hall meeting at North High School in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Just as higher education has never been more important, let’s face it, it’s also never been more expensive,” Obama said during the meeting.
