Fem Flicks Film Series will show the 35-minute documentary “Pornland: How the Porn Industry has Hijacked our Sexuality” at 4 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Media Library at Chilton Hall to showcase feminist viewpoints of the modern pornography industry.

“It’s a good introduction into what a feminist critique of sex is,” women’s studies professor Maia Cudhea said. “It doesn’t go into talking about people having sex and saying that is wrong, like you would from an ethical or moralistic standpoint.”

The Fem Flicks Film Series is a free film series that shows films displaying women and gender roles in society. The series is done in collaboration with the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the Media Library and the Multicultural Center every final Wednesday of the month. The next film in the spring 2015 lineup is “Anita: Speaking Truth to Power” on March 25.

This is the seventh season of the series. Cudhea will lead a 20 minute Q&A after the film.

“Pornland” focuses on the evolution of the porn industry from Playboy magazines to “hardcore” pornography and easy accessibility on the Internet.

The film includes a lecture by Wheelock College sociology and women’s studies professor Gail Dines, who said hardcore pornography affects men’s real-life sexual expectations and how they form romantic relationships with others.

Dines, who wrote the book of the same name, said the average man is first introduced to porn at 11 years old.

She said the way the porn industry today differs from the way the porn industry used to work, and before the Internet, access to pornography was more limited.

Associate librarian Kim Stanton said she was somewhat unfamiliar about the porn industry before watching the film.

“This particular film is not about pornography in general. It’s about the porn industry,” Stanton said. “This is about the industry and the way the industry does things to degrade women to earn a profit.”

Stanton said the film may change certain outlooks of pornography that some viewers developed at an early age.

“They are marketing this to men and women growing up, a very impressionable group of people,” she said.

Women’s and gender studies program coordinator Pauline Raffestin said people should find the discussions at the screening event helpful.

“It may come as a little bit of a shock to some people,” Raffestin said. “Modern pornography is more hardcore, has more violence, and the movie focuses on that.”

She also said along with students, parents and people interested in the subject may also find the film informational, especially if people are unfamiliar with the effects of pornography on individuals.

“Twenty or 30 years ago, all young men could put their hands on was a dirty magazine,” Raffestin said. “The message that you get is that this is what men are supposed to like and this is how young men are supposed to treat women.”
