Tuesday, Nov. 28 marked the beginning of the final demolition of Fouts Field, signaling the final stage of destruction. The project began in summer 2013 following the opening of Apogee Stadium.

Fouts Field served as the Mean Green football team’s home turf for 59 years since 1952, when it was originally named Eagle Stadium. The stadium was renamed to Fouts Field in 1954 after Theron J. Fouts. The stadium was renamed to Fouts Field in 1954 after Theron J. Fouts, the athletic director who pushed for the construction of a new stadium. The stadium became home to the track and field team in spring 1951 after moving from their prior home of Eagles Field.

Renovations were made in 1993 to expand the stadium from 20,000 seats to 30,500. Less than 20 years later, a referendum was passed to design a build a new stadium for football. Following the opening of Apogee Stadium, the track and field teams continued to use Fouts Field as their home until 2018, when the new track and field and soccer facilities opened.

The athletic department will hold a memorial event for the stadium at 1:45 p.m. on Dec. 8 outside of Fouts Field.

The projected cost of the demolition totals around $14 million and will open more than 1,000 parking spots on the far west side of campus, assessing an issue vocalized by students.

Fouts Field was home to 74 North Texas football alumni drafted into the NFL, three Sun Belt Conference championships and memories for alumni, staff members and students alike.

“It’s the end of an era as we see the first hit to strike Fouts Field at #UNT,” UNT Facilities said on Twitter Tuesday morning. “But, this will bring construction and needed parking to our growing campus. Thanks for the memories!”
