Update 6:18 a.m.

Firefighters were called back to an apartment Monday night to extinguish a structure fire. Crews quickly ousted the fire at 912 McCormick St., where the department fought a blaze the night before in one of the six apartment units.

Emergency crews were dispatched at about 10:45 p.m., arriving on scene to fire coming from the attic.

No injuries were reported, nor were any in Sunday night’s one-alarm fire.

The department is investigating the cause of both fires. Official details are not yet available, although firefighters on scene did say Sunday night’s fire was likely due to discarded smoking material.

The electrical infrastructure of the apartment was compromised in Sunday’s fire, forcing tenants in six units to be displaced.

“They have one [electric] meter for all six of these units so the owner is going to have to figure out how to assist the other tenants,” firefighter Brian Cox said.

Information will be updated as it becomes available.

According to the Denton Fire Department, the cause of the fire was most likely due to discarded smoking material. However, an official determination hasn’t been made.

Power in the apartments had to be cut due to the fire affecting the electrical wiring.

“They have one [electric] meter for all six of these units so the owner is going to have to figure out how to assist the other tenants,” firefighter Brian Cox said.

Most of the damage was caused outside the apartment, while parts of the roof on the inside were burned.

“We are still having to take the ceiling out to just keep it from spreading anymore,” deputy fire marshal Chad Weldon said.IMG954097 copy

Another resident of the complex, Kimberly Rae-Flynn, slept while the fire raged a floor above her.

“It is scary, I didn’t even know they were knocking on my door,” Rae-Flynn said. “Everything was so thick up there, I couldn’t breathe.”
