A plane trailing a banner that read “Fire Rick Villarreal” flew over UNT campus Thursday afternoon.
Last month, a group of disgruntled North Texas fans raised $2,000 to fly the banner at a home game on Halloween against the University of Texas at San Antonio, but the plane did not fly due to inclement weather.
Villarreal has been under scrutiny by fans and donors recently because of the lack of success by the football team, which is is currently 1-8 this season. He fired former head coach Dan McCarney after a record-setting 66-7 loss to Portland State University on Homecoming.
In addition to the banner flying, a group of fans has also started a fundraiser to raise money for a billboard sharing a similar message.
