Floor collapses during party at student apartment in Denton

Approximately 50 residents were displaced at The Ridge at North Texas apartment complex after the floor of a third-story unit collapsed during a party Sunday morning, according to law enforcement officials. No major injuries were reported.
A fire alarm at the complex went off around 1:43 a.m. Denton 911 began receiving calls around 2 a.m said Bryan Cose, public information officer for the Denton Police Department.
The first engine to arrive at the scene called for more help. Maintenance workers and the apartment manager came out as well.

About five to seven people were treated for minor injuries at the scene. A press release from Denton PD stated there were no major injuries and no one was transported by ambulance.
Cose said five others drove themselves to local hospitals.
Parker Heineman, an employee at the Ridge, said they currently did not have a lot of information regarding what will happen with the residents. The complex is hoping to have more information tomorrow.
A statement emailed to residents from the apartment complex stated they are in the process of inspecting the building and offered a Best Western Hotel as an alternative. The Ridge said they would reimburse residents the cost for lodging, according to the statement.

Videos on social media show a crowded party and attendees jumping up and down before the floor collapses. Cose said the party was overcrowded and movement caused the floor to give in and fall into the second-floor apartment.
The building has been closed temporarily. Residents who live in the building in units not affected by the collapse are not being let inside.
“Until a structural engineer takes a look at the building, no one will be allowed in,” Cose said.
