As they mill around campus, many students debate with one another the multitude of restaurant options.

If these discussions lead to the craving of pulled pork and tangy sauce, the only barbecue place near campus happens to be Old House BBQ, which blends an old-timey atmosphere with a solid selection of smoky meats and serviceable sides.

Located on 1007 Avenue C, Old House BBQ is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday through Sunday.

Though it doesn’t deliver the best barbecue food in Denton—that honor is bestowed to Metzlers—they do offer a nice change of pace from the numerous sandwich and pizza shops around UNT.

One of the good things about this little place, is that they have daily specials, such as a two meat, two side combination. The pork and jalapeno sausage are the choices for this plate, as the two compliment each other remarkably well.

The sauce is run of the mill and you’ll swear you’ve tasted it before, even if it’s your first time at this specific place. Tender meat and savory sausage save the meal, though, because the sides are ho-hum in taste, especially the beans which are too moist.

Stumbling in on a sandwich day could make you happy and full because their sliced beef barbecue is loaded on a bun. The food is great if you load it up with sauce because the meat can be dry at times.

Almost all of the food is priced under $10 and there’s definitely enough piled on each plate to get full. The one thing over that threshold is the full rack of ribs, which costs $19.99.

The sides include smoked beans, jalapeño pinto beans, corn on the cob, rice, green beans, fried okra, mac and cheese, cheesy potatoes, mashed potatoes, fries and onion rings.

Old House also offers up banana pudding and ice cream cones for desert.

Overall, the barbecue isn’t bad, but the sides could be better. Guess you’ll just have to settle if you want barbecue in walking distance because this is all we’ve got.
