The Mean Green football team is looking for a rebound performance when they take on the Nicholls State University Colonels on Saturday. The last time the team took the field was last Thursday when they were blown out at home by Louisiana Tech University.

“We’re hoping we can get back to playing Mean Green football this week, which obviously we were a poor example of Thursday night and dominated in most phases of the game,” head coach Dan McCarney said.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Apogee Stadium and the game can be viewed on TXA 21.

The Mean Green will be starting redshirt freshman Dajon Williams at quarterback on Saturday after starting sophomore Josh Greer for the first three games of the season. Through those three games, the team is last in Conference USA in total offense.

“He’s our guy this week, and we’re going to rally behind him because our quarterback play hasn’t even been close,” McCarney said. “We’ve played three games and we haven’t thrown one touchdown pass, so you don’t have to be in the Hall-of-Fame in college or in the NFL to figure out that we’ve got to get better.”

Williams played for much of the fourth quarter in the La. Tech game and led the team on two scoring drives. Junior wide receiver Carlos Harris said this game will be a chance for the team to try to establish themselves as an offense.

“Just to establish an identity for our offense, to show that we can move the ball down the field and score in the redzone when the opportunities present it,” Harris said. “We just need to, overall, form an identity for the offense because the past few games, we haven’t done that.”

Nicholls State comes into this game 0-3 and is a Division I-AA school. Despite that, sophomore defensive end Jarrian Roberts said that the Colonels will come in ready to play.

“We’re just focusing on ourselves and we’re trying to get better as a group and as a team. They’re going to come in here hungry. College football is not an easy game ever, so we’re just going to come and try and get the win,” Roberts said.

Nicholls State’s head coach Charlie Stubbs resigned from the program on Sunday because of health reasons, which left Steve Axman as the interim head coach. McCarney said that he wishes the best for Stubbs and that the Colonels will come out strong to play for their old coach.

“Nicholls State, I’m sure, will come in very motivated,” McCarney said. “They’ll be a lot of emotions. I’m sure they’re going to play for Coach Stubbs, who had to retire and resign and give up this season as much as he loves those players.”
