The Mean Green football team lost quarterback Riley Dodge to a shoulder injury at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the lead soon after, and the game in the second overtime period 31-30.

In just the second overtime game in UNT history, the Mean Green (1-1) was one play away from defeating the Ohio Bobcats (1-1).  Ohio found the end zone with a 16-yard pass, and because of field position from a roughing the passer penalty, went for the 2-point conversion instead of the extra-point and won the game.

“There’s nothing we can say to each other to try and make us feel better,” head coach Todd Dodge said. “We are all competitors and we expected to win that game.”

The Mean Green had several opportunities to put the game away early, but could not manage more than a 7-point lead at halftime. There were opportunities late as well, when the team ran two plays on its final drive from the 1-yard line, but could not push through and had to settle for the game-tying field goal attempt.

“We had a chance to win it. We had a dropped pass in the end zone,” Todd Dodge said. “We were on the sidelines holding hands and it just turned on us in a hurry.”

Although the Mean Green defense gave up 31 points, it continued to show improvement from last season, giving up only 232 total yards to the Bulldogs. True freshman punter Will Atterberry did his best to put the unit in good position as five out of six kicks were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

“Our offense has weapons and we need to score more points when we get the chance,“ Todd Dodge said. ” But our special teams has improved dramatically and we feel good about him.”

Redshirt freshman Riley Dodge, who was replaced by junior Nathan Tune, left the game with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. His status for future games at this point is unknown.
