The Mean Green football team will play its 1000th game in program history on Saturday when Florida Atlantic University comes to Apogee Stadium for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game can be seen on Fox College Sports.

“I know there will be people that come back to this game that may not normally come back because it is Homecoming,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “It’s a celebration of their careers as a student, or as a student athlete at North Texas, and I really do want to make them proud when they come back this weekend.”

North Texas is currently 2-6 and on a four-game losing streak. To be bowl eligible for a second straight season, the Mean Green would have to win all of its final four games.

“It hurts, it’s disappointing, it’s frustrating, it’s all those things,” McCarney said. “But as I said, we’ve got half of the conference season ahead of us, and how do you handle that? How do you finish? That’s really what it’s all about.”

Last week was the Mean Green’s second bye-week of the season. The first one came after the team’s 77-3 win over Nicholls State University on Sept. 20. Since then, the team has not won a game. Junior quarterback Andrew McNulty said this bye-week has helped some of the team recharge.

“A bye-week always helps guys get their legs back underneath them, get their bodies healthy,” McNulty said. “It’s coming at a pretty good point in the season for us where we really need to gear down on the rest of the season.”

McNulty also said Homecoming is the perfect opportunity to finally snap the losing streak.

“We know that the fans are going to be fired up because it’s Homecoming,” McNulty said. “We got a lot of guys that will come back that used to go to North Texas or used to play here, and that kind of builds an extra meaning on top of it.”

FAU comes into the game with a 3-6 overall record. However, three of those loses came against the University of Nebraska, the University of Alabama and Marshall University, all nationally ranked teams.

“It’s been a while since we’ve even sniffed victory,” junior wide receiver Carlos Harris said. “It’s going to be great, it’s going to be fun in front of the home crowd. We have a nice tradition of winning at home, so we just want to keep that up.”

Despite the losses, Harris said the team’s mindset to “Hit Six” remains the same.

“That’s the set goal we had at the beginning of the year, but again you have to take things one game at a time,” Harris said. “The first opportunity we’ll get to pursue that again is this upcoming Saturday, hitting three and just building from there.”
