Tonight, Denton could become the first Texas city to ban hydraulic fracking.

City Council will hear resident input on a grass roots petition to ban the industry at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall at 215 E McKinney Street. The petition garnered almost 2,000 signatures in May, more than three times the amount needed to require the council’s attention.

As of 1:40 p.m., almost 60 people had signed up to speak on the petition and most of the council chamber’s seats were either taken or reserved for those who have signed up to speak.

City officials were already meeting about the topic in the council chamber.

It could be a standing-room only crowd. Residents are advised to get there early.
