Freshman pitching duo lead softball to two wins in home debut

North Texas softball made its long awaited home debut, playing back-to-back games Saturday night in the Schutt Classic. The Mean Green (5-4) won both games after being led by the strong freshman pitching duo of Maria Priest and Hope Trautwein.

North Texas 7, Prairie View A&M 0

Priest finished off with a career day against Prairie View A&M (1-8) in her first start at home, throwing a career-high six strikeouts. Five of those were through the first three innings. She also managed to give up only 4 hits.

Priest felt comfortable being in front of the home crowd and believes her teammates really helped her settle in.

“My offense got on the board for me really early and they made the plays behind me so that always helps,” Priest said. “Kudos to them for allowing me to have the game that I had.”

The Mean Green came out strong offensively. Tying a season-high with three home runs in the contest.

In the bottom of the 1st, junior outfielder Sally Gastelo and sophomore infielder Lacy Gregory  scored off a double to give North Texas an early 2-0 lead.

Sophomore outfielder Hannah Rebar then hit a home run, her third of the season to extend the Mean Green lead to 4-0.

Two bats later, freshman Kourtney Williams hit her first home run of the season giving North Texas a five-run first inning.

Sophomore catcher Nicole Ochotnicki capped off the first game by recording her second home run of the season in the second inning to put the Mean Green ahead 7-0.

The early momentum carried North Texas to its first win of the night.

North Texas 3, Grambling 1

The Mean Green won in a different way in the second game against Grambling State (1-8), scoring no runs through three innings.

“Second game definitely took us a little longer to get on their pitcher but I think we did a good job of getting the first lead off on and then moving her over to get in scoring position,” Rebar said.

Trautwein also had a great performance pitching with seven strikeouts through the first three innings and did not give up a hit until the fifth. She finished the game with 13 strikeouts, which ties Ashley Kirk for the fifth most strikeouts in a single game in program history.

In the bottom of the fourth, Rebar had an RBI single which junior Hannah Gerecke scored off of to put the Mean Green up 1-0.

Rebar then hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-0

Grambling had a homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to trim the lead to 3-1.

But in the last inning, Trautwein managed to close the game out and give the Mean Green it’s second win of the night.

“[Hope] was just dialed in,” Kee said. “We just went right after them and luckily for us she was able to throw zeroes up until we could get that one run on the board and then that two run home run by Rebar that was clutch.”

Next up: North Texas has day two of the Schutt Classic in Denton against Grambling State then Prairie View A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
