General, choral and instrumental music sophomore Troy Elliott and recreation, event and sport management sophomore Kamaeron Willard will be the next Student Government Association president and vice president, respectively, after winning 65 percent of the vote.

1,928 students voted in the election, 6 percent of the total population. This is down from 8 percent last year and 10 percent the year before that.

Elliott said he was surprised to have received so much support.

“We were prepared and expecting to go to a runoff,” he said. “I’m overwhelmed with the support that we’re getting.”

Competitors Pedro Ortiz and Katrina Gibson received 28 percent and 7 percent of the vote, respectively.

Most senate seats filled without incident, but the college of merchandising, hospitality and tourism will have a runoff. The college has two senate seats, one of which was won by senior Jackson Savarese. The other will be decided in a runoff between juniors James Matthew Strait and Tarun Girish, each of whom received 35 votes. The runoff will be held April 7 through April 9.
