Gov. Greg Abbott on the marriage equality ruling

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had this to say about the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling on marriage equality in a press release:
“The Supreme Court has abandoned its role as an impartial judicial arbiter and has become an unelected nine-member legislature. Five Justices on the Supreme Court have imposed on the entire country their personal views on an issue that the Constitution and the Court’s previous decisions reserve to the people of the States.”

He has never been a proponent of gay rights. And, in Denton County, same-sex marriage couples are being denied marriage licenses. Denton County District Attorney Paul Johnson has given County Clerk Juli Luke deciding power on application status. And we reported her saying the county will not issue licenses today.
Earlier Friday morning, Abbott tweeted his thoughts on the SCOTUS decision.
“Marriage was defined by God. No man can redefine it. We will defend our religious liberties. #tcot,” he said.
