Brief: Hardwick transferring after one season at UNT
Staff Report
Standout freshman point guard P.J. Hardwick is leaving UNT, Mean Green basketball head coach Tony Benford said in a prepared statement yesterday afternoon.
“I want to thank the University of North Texas, because it has been a blessing to play here,” Hardwick said in a press release. “I want to thank my teammates and the entire coaching staff, and I wish them nothing but the best.”
The Florida native averaged 3.7 points, 2.5 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 0.9 steals this season in 23 minutes per game. Hardwick played in all 32 of the Mean Green’s games and became the starting point guard after sophomore Chris Jones suffered an injury in late December.
Hardwick was the first recruit under Benford, joining the Mean Green after initially signing a letter of intent to Mississippi State University.
“P.J. made tremendous strides with his growth both on and off the court last season, and was always accountable to his teammates and the coaches,” Benford said in the press release. “We wish P.J. the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.”
Hardwick is the second Mean Green player to seek a transfer this offseason, following freshman guard Clarke Overlander.
