Sweat drips down the faces of many eager listeners as they stand in the sun waiting to hear about the running course they are about to endure.  Once they learn their route for the evening, they take off as one unit into the heat.

This is the scene every Wednesday night outside Oak Street Drafthouse where runners begin the Denton Social Run.  It is a 5K route that people from all over Denton run frequently.  Afterward, the runners can meet up at Oak Street Drafthouse for a drink.

The participants are usually UNT and TWU students alongside Denton locals.  UNT graduate student Sarah Blumhardt said she runs in the Denton Social Run weekly.

“When I first did the run, it was just so I could get out of the house and off of my couch,” Blumhardt said.  “The Social Run made me fall in love with running because there is no pressure there.  It’s just a bunch of people who want to exercise together.”

Coast Guard veteran Tony Roman decided to start the run when he moved to Denton because he said there were no organized group runs for people to meet up.

“We switch out 5k routes every week,” Roman said.  “We average about 200-240 during the summer and our largest group was over 400.  There have been a number of couples that have met there.”

UNT senior Sarah Tweddle said she participates in the run weekly because she enjoys the social benefits.

“I started doing the run about six months ago, and I have been doing it ever since,” Tweddle said.  “What keeps me coming back is all of the amazing people that I have met along the way.  I like running, but I love my close friends that I’ve made through the Social Run even more.”

Although the run has evolved over time, Roman said that the biggest impact he has seen is what the social run has done for the participants’ health.

“Many people were not into running beforehand,” Roman said.  “Some started off walking. Now they run a few times a week and participate in races.”

The Denton Social Run is held every Wednesday starting at 7 p.m.
