A 73rd minute goal by junior forward Rachel Holden proved to be the difference in North Texas’ third conference match, defeating Florida International University 1-0 in Denton.

It was Holden’s sixth goal of the season and her first in Conference-USA play.

“The ball went right in the air to me,” said Holden. “I just volleyed it in.”

It was the 32nd minute when Karla Pineda nudged a ball forward past the FIU defense for North Texas’ next best chance. Holden used her pace to get to the ball and get it past the keeper, but the left goalpost would deny her.

FIU held the majority of possession in the first half, but their chances never looked extremely dangerous. The Panthers best chance fell in the 35th minute when Ellen Crist ripped a shot from the middle of the box but it went wide with pace.

That opened North Texas up to one more chance just a minute before the end of the half when Molly Grisham hit a thumping header from Pineda corner. However, the FIU goalkeeper snagged it, and the teams went into the half deadlocked at 0-0.

Head coach John Hedlund was not with his team due to an illness, so it would be the rest of his coaching staff who would take over. Assistants Daniel Dobson, Martin Clayes and Matt Montayne were coaching for the majority of the match. They made little adjustments headed into the second half, which would pay off in the end.

“To be honest, we didn’t change anything from the first half,” said Montayne. “We just preached going in and playing hard soccer. Stay in their back, win the second ball and look out wide and attack. No adjustments in the formation, we say some lopsided play and attack the sides. It ended up paying off in the end.”

Holden’s goal in the 73rd minute would be the difference as the ball fell to her from the corner after making contact with Alexsis Cable. Holden rocketed the shot in off the volley with her left foot. It was one of North Texas’ four shots on target of 16 shots total. FIU would finish with eight total shots, only four on target as well.

FIU then turned the pressure up and attack, but goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine stood tall, making four saves on the day in collecting her eighth shutout of the season.

“I saw a lot of movement out of their strikers,” said Kerestine. “They were good at playing in tight spaces, other than that, my defense held it down for me.”

North Texas improves to 10-2-1 on the season and faces the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Oct. 9th in Charlotte, North Carolina.
