The Mean Green soccer team  extended their record to 2-0 after a tight 1-0 victory over the Oregon State Beavers at home. Sophomore forward Rachel Holden scored the game winning goal in the 87th minute.

“Composure is one huge thing” Holden said. “That’s always what I tell myself, just to not freak out when I get and open opportunity. Of course there is some you’re going to miss, some you’re going to make, and we got one today and that’s all we needed.”

Holden’sgoal came after a full game of opportunities missed by the Mean Green (2-0). Junior forward Karla Pineda had a great game getting into space and putting three shots on goal but none of those shots were able to get past freshman Oregon State (0-2) goalkeeper Bella Geist. Before her goal, Holden had taken four shots, including a shot in the 76th minute that was saved by a diving Oregon State goalkeeper after the net was left open.

“Playing a team like this helps us get ready for the other teams in conference because this is a PAC-12 team,” junior forward Amber Haggerty said. “So it helps us mentally and physically get ready for the teams that are basically in our conference.”

On the other side of the ball, the Mean Green defense stood strong the entire game. One of the only scoring opportunities the Beavers had came late in the second half but ended in a shot one wide due to the pressure of incoming Mean Green defenders.  Junior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine shut out the Beavers and had three saves, all of which came in the first half.

The Mean Green will now hit the road to take on the University of Houston on Aug. 29 and Lamar University on Aug. 30.
