Is SHEIN or SHE-OUT: a guide to shopping at online discount stores

Like many people in this economy, I’m a sucker for things on clearance or on sale. So when online discount stores like SHEIN started popping up, I was interested but thought the prices were too good to be true.

To put it simply, SHEIN is a cheaper version of Forever 21 without the cringe-worthy phrases and Ross if it were on steroids. Since I missed back-to-school shopping and I’m a broke college student, I decided to test it out.

What I ordered

I ordered seven items from SHEIN: an overall skirt, a pair of earrings, tights, a two-piece set, a romper, a cherry print dress and a rib-knit crop top. What would have been $75 as the “retail price,” ended up being $46.80, which includes shipping, sales tax, the student discount and a “shipping guarantee.”

I had placed the order on Aug. 25 at night and it arrived the morning of Aug. 31, which is pretty good considering the cheap shipping price. Packaging was very simple and the items came in plastic zipper bags with the brand name on it. If you wanted to, you could reuse them.

The material for the majority of items were actually not that bad. They were soft and stretchy for the most part and looked much like the pictures on the website. My main complaint would be on the navy cherry dress because it was a fabric that wrinkles easily. It might have been the most disappointing one since it was the most expensive out of all the items.

The fishnet-patterned tights were one-size only and had plenty of stretch to them, which I need because as the saying goes, thick thighs save lives.

A small issue I had with the order were with the earrings. The back of the earrings had been unglued at some point during its travel, as it had been clearly attached with hot glue. This was nothing that couldn’t be fixed and I was able to reattach them with nail glue. Now they’re a cute, functioning pair of earrings.

How to prep before ordering

I didn’t go in completely blind before ordering. After asking people who had previously ordered from them, most of them recalled positive experiences with a few misses.

They recommended to intensively go through the reviews, especially the ones with pictures, and be suspicious of ones that don’t have any reviews or pictures.

This definitely saved me from some sketchy items. However, I did take a risk with the top since it didn’t have a picture in any of the reviews and it turned out fine. It seems like it would be hard to mess up a basic top, but you’d be surprised.

As for the dreaded size guide, being 5 feet tall and with some curves, it’s personally hard to find the right fit. For sizes, most of the items I ordered were a size medium, with the romper and crop top being a size large. I strongly recommend looking at the measurements SHEIN has for its items since they all vary, which have mostly been true to size in that aspect.

Most of the time when looking at the pictures on the site, you can tell what kind of material it’s made out of as well.

Overall for the prices, it’s really a hit or miss on product quality. Honestly, I might order from it again and it’s worth trying it out at least once.

My rating: 4.5/5
