The North Texas Fair and Rodeo kicks off at 6 p.m. today at 2217 N. Carroll Blvd. The annual event will run through Aug. 24, and will feature food, livestock shows, rodeo events and live music until 11 p.m. each night,.More than 20 musical acts will take the stage during the fair, including country music stars Jack Ingram and Josh Abbott.

“We always try to bring in different attractions each year and change it up a bit,” executive director Glenn Carlton said.

This year, though, the fair will add the “Amazing Rain Forest Experience” to the schedule, something Carlton said they’d been trying to get for years. The station exhibits more than 50 animals, including three tigers that will perform with trainers two to three times per day.

Trainer Robert Mullen has been performing with endangered animals for 12 years.

“I have the greatest job in the entire world,” Mullen said. “I get to hang out with critters and play with critters all day long.”

Mullen said the most important part of his job was raising awareness about the dying rain forests, and letting people know what they could do locally.

“We need to think about ecosystems globally, and that includes locally,” he said. “We don’t try to tell people what to do, but when we get them asking their own questions, that’s when people change their lives.”

The exhibit will be open all hours of the day and is included with the price of admission. Events begin at 6 p.m. weeknights, 10 a.m. this weekend and 1 p.m. Saturday the 24th, and run through 11 p.m. each night. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at ntfair.com/tickets-and-deals.

Check back next week for an update from the fairgrounds.
