UNT: Jessica Williams lecture canceled
Staff Reports
The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams’ Distinguished Lecture Series talk has been cancelled, the university announced Tuesday. Yes, there will be refunds.
UNT did not disclose why the lecture fell through, but it had already been postponed once.
Williams most recently turned heads with a bit addressing people who disapprove of singer Beyoncé’s Super Bowl halftime performance. Many people, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, criticized Beyoncé for singing “Formation,” a song which calls for black power and demands attention to police violence.
“Race was brought in because Beyoncé was brought in,” Williams said on the Daily Show. “And brace yourself, you might want to sit down for this, but Beyoncé is black. And as a black person, you walk around every day constantly reminded that you are black—we’re more likely to get paid less, we’re more likely to get sent to prison, and we’re more likely to win a dance competition. What? It’s not all bad.”
