A 41-point second half performance led the North Texas Mean Green men’s basketball team (19-4, 7-3 Conference USA) to their nineteenth win of the season over the Charlotte 49ers (5-17, 2-9 C-USA). With the 73-66 victory, the Mean Green are one win away from tying the 2017-18 win total of 20 games with four matchups left in the season.

This win also put North Texas one game back from first place in C-USA behind Old Dominion (18-6, 8-3 C-USA).

The first half was back-and-forth, with Charlotte maintaining the lead for most of the night, but without either team grabbing a significant lead. After the 49ers gained their biggest lead of the night with 4:23 left in the first half, the Mean Green recovered from an eight-point deficit to end the first half down 32-34.

“It was a tough start,” head coach Grant McCasland said. “They did a good job executing and got us on a few things that we weren’t prepared for.”

The second half started with North Texas taking a lead with 18:13 left off of a 3-pointer from redshirt freshman guard Umoja Gibson. Twelve minutes of lead-changing occurred until the Mean Green took their final lead of the game with 6:17 remaining.

North Texas went on a 13-6 scoring run to close out the game and win by seven.

“From a mentality standpoint, you can see that our group is responding well to adversity,” McCasland said. “This is one of those wins where across the board, it was a consistent effort to not let bad plays get you down and find a way to make it back on defense and get stops.”

The Mean Green’s biggest advantage was the turnover margin. Sixteen turnovers from Charlotte led to 22 points for North Texas, whereas 13 turnovers from the Mean Green led to four points for the 49ers.

Gibson and junior guard Roosevelt Smart led North Texas in scoring, knocking down 19 points apiece. Fifteen of Gibson’s 19 points came from a 5-of-9 shooting performance beyond the arch. Redshirt sophomore forward Jahmiah Simmons led the Mean Green with seven rebounds on the night.

“[Jahmiah] misses a wide open layup to start the game, then he comes back and dunks one,” McCasland said. “That’s what I love about him.”

Senior guard Jon Davis led the 49ers in scoring with 25 points and freshman guard Cooper Robb led with 10 rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Mean Green will host the Marshall Herd (13-10, 6-4 C-USA) at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7. Prior to this weekend’s matchups, the two teams were tied for second place in the conference.
