I hate to sound like a broken record, but I truly never thought I would be writing this letter.

When I enrolled at Texas A&M-Commerce as a marketing major, I figured writing would just be a hobby of mine. Halfway through my freshman year, I knew I was lying to myself and I transferred to UNT and became a digital and print journalism major.

Part of the reason I joined the North Texas Daily in 2018 was that I loved sports and writing about them. Fast forward through three semesters as the sports editor and here I am — the Chief. It’s still hard to wrap my head around but I am so excited to take on this challenge.

The Daily and student media across the country is in a tough spot. Advertising sales are dropping, student fee backing is disappearing and print media overall is on the decline. It’s all part of the job and I’m ready to lead the Daily through this weird transitional period.

This semester, the Daily is going to be focusing on expanding its multimedia presence. After I introduced the Last Draft podcast in my first semester, I fell in love with the idea of adding podcasts to all five of our sections. So far, I’ve worked with our editors on working in podcasts into the News, Arts & Life, Dose and Opinion sections. You can expect to see those starting next week.

Another thing you can look forward to seeing is more videography from our writers and photographers. One of the great things about the advancement of technology we’re seeing is the ability to film, edit and publish straight from phones. With that being said, you can expect to see more footage from our writers on-site during reporting.

If you didn’t know, the Daily now has a Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube account. Make no mistake, the behind-the-scenes videos and memes will be flying this semester. Beyond that, I’m working with our illustrations editor, Austin, to introduce short animated videos to our arsenal.

To facilitate our expected growth on multimedia, we’re introducing a new Twitter account specifically for podcasts, videos and photos produced by our staff. Go follow @ntdailymedia to stay up-to-date.

Speaking of social media, we’re bringing back the North Texas Daily Sports Twitter account (@ntdailysports, if that’s your thing) in an effort to split up the coverage on our main account.

UNT has stressed that its business school is a focus now and the Daily is aiming to match that. I’m in the beginning stages of working with writers to introduce a business section that could reflect what the Dose section does for the paper. We’ll be reaching out to UNT professors and local financial advisors to see how national and international economic policies will affect local businesses and UNT students. UNT has a large network of alumni that are active in the business world and the plan is for this new section to play a big roll in bringing a new audience to the Daily.

When I was chosen to serve this position back in November, my mind went straight to the team I was going to build around me. After all, I can only be as good as the editorial staff that does all the grunt work for me. To that note, I’m so proud of the team that I’ve put together. Yes, it’s the first week, but I’ve already seen this team brainstorming and coming up with fantastic ideas. All of our section editors are returning except for one, our illustrations editor is making a second lap and the managing editor I hired is the whole reason I even applied for this job, even if she didn’t mean to convince me to.

Regardless if you’re a UNT student, professor, alumni or Denton-native, there are big things coming from the North Texas Daily, and I’m excited for all the amazing content this team is going to put together this semester.
