Letter from the (Sports) Editor

You don’t typically see letters from sports editors, but with the mixed reactions of appreciation and disappointment from readers this semester, I thought it would be appropriate to take the opportunity to respond.

When Alec Spicer gave a transfer student from a DII school in East Texas the task of running the sports section, he trusted that I would be able to lead it in a new direction.

And if there is one thing I’ve been the proudest of during my first semester here, it’s exactly that.

My writers have had the opportunity to cover not only the 13 other NCAA sports on campus this fall, but also club sports. We as a staff have given these athletes a spotlight to talk about the sports they love, and their gratitude does not go unnoticed. I cannot stress how much fun it has been to read and learn about countless club sports from our club sports beat writer Jake Solomon, as well as other writers who were eager to have a shot.

Our sports team has had the pleasure to cover the fifth consecutive Conference USA championship from the soccer team, the tennis team winning national tournaments and defeating state powerhouses, the swimming & diving team dominating local events and so much more.

On top of that, we introduced a revamped North Texas Daily Sports Podcast, starring myself (shameless plug), senior staff writer Bronte Hermesmeyer and staff writer Matthew Suarez. Podcasts are the future of news consumption, and we’ve been able to give insight and analysis into all of Mean Green sports in a user-friendly manner.

Of course, our job is to report news and be critical when it’s appropriate. When the volleyball team struggled through the first half of their season, we wrote a story about it. When the football team lost three games to teams they should have beaten, we wrote a story about it. When reports surfaced of head football coach Seth Littrell receiving attention from larger programs, we had a column a lot readers didn’t agree with, but nonetheless, we wrote a story about it.

Columns give reporters an opportunity to do one thing you’re not allowed to do in journalism very often: give your opinion a megaphone. Our writers have written columns on NCAA transfer rules, the aforementioned possibility of Littrell leaving, their predictions on basketball season outcomes and much more.

The sports staff has made strides to bring you only the purest of reporting, and I’m immensely proud of the growth I’ve seen from every single one of them in a span of just four months.

Sure, we’ve made some errors in judgment, but we rectified them and learned from them.

To me, the important thing to note is that we’ve made a conscious effort to avoid filling pages with nothing but football coverage to ensure one of the fundamental principles of journalism: fair and balanced reporting. As a byproduct, it has been a privilege to highlight the other amazing programs here at UNT that haven’t received the respect they deserve.

Leading the sports section this semester has been one of my greatest challenges and sources of joy. When I interviewed for this job back in May, I never imagined all of the amazing experiences it would bring along with it. I wanted the chance to not only thank Alec for giving me this incredible opportunity, but to my copy editor Kiera Geils for helping me grow as a journalist, my coworkers, my staff for putting in the effort to make this all happen and to those who read the North Texas Daily, for supporting us.

In a time when Mean Green athletics is clearly on the up and up, I promise that the North Texas Daily will be there every step of the way.
