Spectacular light shows and live electronic music will greet the waking hours of 2016 as a cheering crowd of dancing bodies gathers at the Dallas Market Hall for electronic dance music (EDM) festival Lights All Night.

The two-day event is back for its sixth year, and as when it began, it will once more take place on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s a year-round process,” festival co-creator and organizer Scott Osburn said. “As soon as the event is over, we’re already getting in touch with artists and performers for the next year.”

Headliners this year are Hardwell and Porter Robinson on Jan. 31 and Flosstradamus and Kaskade on Jan. 1. Artists like Datsik, Kill Them With Colour and Claude Vonstroke will also appear onstage.

With colleague Hank Keller, Osburn started the festival in 2010. He had just graduated with a theatre degree from the University of Montana. The two started booking acts to get the “lay of the land,” Osburn said. They consult together on any talent that comes to the stage.

“There are so many different ways to observe the marketplace,” he said. “We decide [on performers] based on what type of response they get from fans and reading and listening to what people want.”

Pre-medical senior Michael Bosch has been going to the festival since 2011 and plans on returning this year for another two-day journey. Each year has been uniquely amazing in its own right, he said.

“The environment is the best thing to experience at Lights All Night,” Bosch said. “Every year we all come together for a couple nights to enjoy the music we love. In the process, you make so many new friends.”

To keep fans pouring through the gates, Osburn and Keller hire artists that are relevant at the time. But they also look for performers that are new and undiscovered.

“We want to hit a core with the audience,” Osburn said. “The headliners are always a fan favorite.”

Each year brings an opportunity for new elements, Osburn said. He and Keller raise the quality of production and the musical talent the festival offers each year while keeping their product consistent.

This year will feature lighting packages from Berlin.

“We’re always trying to be creative with our layout and production,” Osburn said. “From an electronic standpoint, creating an experience is our biggest concern. It’s a different type of experience.”

As the festival has changed from year to year, it has grown in popularity and received more recognition. The work that Osburn and Keller put into the event each year is evident to fans and regulars of the festival.

“They always provide a wide variation of genres to the people, and it’s never the same artist over and over,” Bosch said. “The production is always spot-on when it comes to the stages and lights. They put in hard work to make it better each year.”
