Live from ACL: The Black Keys fail to impress

The Black Keys broke into mainstream radio with their sixth album, “Brothers” in 2010, and then exploded after releasing “El Camino” in 2011.

While ACL celebrates up-and-coming artists alongside platinum selling superstars, the Keys should not have headlined the festival’s opening night.

Their sound – grungy, loud and with bluesy roots- is better suited for tricked out car stereos and smaller venues.

The band was a mess. Much of its performance was free styled and did not feature many of the major hits many people came to hear.

They opened with one of their biggest hits, “Howlin’ For You,” but for the next five or six songs the group performed “oldies but goodies,” as lead singer Dan Auerbach put it.

He lost the crowd three songs in.

The band’s sound reverberated through the whole festival and Auerach’s voice was perfectly capable of reaching thousands across the park.

However, they could not find the balance between playing personal favorites and major hits to please the fans.

It was a fun show with no glaring musical atrocities, but there was no connection with the audience and no understanding of what they wanted to hear.

This was a major opportunity for the Keys to show the world what they’ve got, and they fell short.

Keys fans hoping to hear the band at its best should instead pay to see them in smaller venues, or continue to rock out in the car with the windows down and “El Camino” blaring.
