Supporters of presidential nominee Sen. Bernie Sanders hosted a rally Sunday at the Greater Denton Arts Council.

The rally drew in a large mix of people and featured former Agriculture Commissioner of Texas Jim Hightower and award-winning rock artist Jessie Frye. As expected from a college town, most of the supporters were young adults, some entering the political arena for the first time.

The rally came days before early voting begins in Texas, on Tuesday. And there is more Sanders activism at UNT than any other candidate.

Cody Hunter, a supporter of Sanders since his announcement to run for president, was inspired by the atmosphere.

“It’s such a positive environment, with so many people with similar ideas of how we can make our lives better,” Hunter said.

Other early arrivers mingled as people continued to trickle in, many with Bernie stickers on their chests.

By the time Frye took the stage there were close to 350 people filling the room, well above the online RSVP list of 269.

Following Frye’s performance was former commissioner Jim Hightower speaking to the energized crowd.

“Fellow revolutionaries!” Hightower said. “Happy Bernie Sanders Valentine’s day!”

Hightower hit all the talking points commonly heard from a Sanders stump speech. Sanders’ call to fix income inequality and dispose of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling drew the most applause from the crowd.

“You cannot buy a president for $27, but you could you buy one who would not be bought for $27,” Hightower said, emphasizing Sanders’ refusal to take super PAC money to fund his campaign. “It’s up to us, not up to Bernie. He’s doing his part, but the campaign really isn’t about Bernie. It’s about you.”
