Just two days after one of the worst offensive performances of the season, the Mean Green women’s basketball team was unable to hold on to a second half lead, falling 77-71 to Louisiana Tech University.

North Texas struggled again with turnovers, racking up 19 in its ninth straight game with 16 or more. For a while, it looked as though the offense would be able to overcome the turnover woes, as junior guard Terra Ellison led a 13-2 run in the second quarter. However, the Mean Green struggled offensively in the third quarter, fell behind and weren’t able to dig out of the hole late in the game.

The loss is the fifth in the last six games for the Mean Green.

“We played with intensity and heart tonight,” senior Acheil Tac said. “Our energy was pretty good. We just have to put this loss behind us and move on.”

After getting off to a slow start in the first quarter, the Mean Green dominated in the second quarter to build a seven-point lead going into halftime. Ellison had a big first half off the bench to help the Mean Green build a lead, while senior Acheil Tac and junior Candice Adams added six points each.

However, North Texas struggled in the second half, shooting just 27 percent from the field in the third quarter. Although turnovers played a big role in the defeat, the Mean Green found most of the starting lineup in foul trouble while Louisiana Tech took advantage at the free-throw line.

Lousiana Tech shot 85 percent from the line and had 13 more free-throw attempts than the Mean Green. North Texas lost the game by six points while missing eight free throws, something that Mitchell noted the team has to fix.

“We definitely put them on the line too much,” coach Jalie Mitchell said. “If we were getting to the line as much as they did, it would be different. We had our opportunities to win this game.”

Offensively, the Mean Green had a balanced scoring night, but struggled on the boards without starting post Bria Frierson. Louisiana Tech was able to out-rebound North Texas 35-26 on the night.

“In addition to her rebounding, Bria brings a lot to the defensive end as well,” Mitchell said. “She’s probably one of our best interior defenders. We tried to step up, but that was tough.”

Senior forward Brandi Wingate was the difference in the game for the Lady Techsters. The Northwest Florida State College transfer almost single-handedly led a second half comeback, finishing with 29 points.

“We need to continue to play great defense,” Adams said. “We have to make our free-throws, make layups, take quality shots and play our game.”

North Texas will look to snap out of its recent funk at home against Old Dominion University Feb. 11. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
