There will be a gathering at the Denton Square at 6 p.m. Friday to celebrate the landmark Supreme Court decision that deems marriage a right to same-sex couples in all 50 states.

The Stonewall Democrats of Denton County will organize the gathering, according to a handout.

The celebration follows the 5 to 4 ruling the Supreme Court issued Friday morning. The justices said the Constitution supports same-sex couples’ right to marry in every state.

Friday’s ruling is a long-sought legal victory for activists spanning decades.

Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. was among the dissenters.

President Obama tweeted soon after the announcement, writing that the ruling is a “big step in our march toward equality.”

Among others, Republican presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Rick Santorum, who is a longtime foe of marriage equality, came out in opposition to the decision. Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, a support of marriage equality, endorsed the decision along with Obama.

The Denton County is not yet issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Legal teams are reviewing the SCOTUS ruling to ensure it’s in compliances with the law.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office said it would issue its own statement on the matter.

Texas banned same-sex marriage, but that was ruled unconstitutional in a separate case.
