North Texas’ Mason Fine has lit up defenses this season to the tune of 1,918 passing yards and 15 touchdowns with only one interception.

Simply put: Fine has more yards than Heisman contenders Will Grier of West Virginia, Kyler Murray of Oklahoma and Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama.

Grier has accumulated 1,819 yards through the air and amassed 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. Murray has 1,764 yards passing with 21 touchdowns and three interceptions. Tagovailoa only has 1,495 yards but 18 touchdowns and zero interceptions. (Oh, and he has not played in the fourth quarter of a game yet.)

So why are we not talking about Fine as a Heisman Trophy contender? It’s because Fine plays in the Conference USA, where the competition is not as tough.

Tagovailoa plays in the SEC — the toughest conference in college football. Grier and Murray play in the Big 12 where offenses run rampant.

Tagovailoa has played against Louisville, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Arkansas. Grier has played against Tennessee, Kansas State and Texas Tech. Murray has played UCLA, Iowa State, Baylor and Texas. Compare those teams, Fine’s competition has been Southern Methodist, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and Liberty — not the same level.

Another factor that is hurting Fine’s chances of making the trip to New York is that the Mean Green lost to Louisiana Tech. Yes, other quarterbacks might have losses, but not to unranked non-Power 5 teams.

Let’s say Fine and the Mean Green run the table and win the C-USA championship — he would still need some help to make it to New York. Now if Tagovailoa and Alabama lose a game, or Murray and the Sooners cool off and Grier and the Mountaineers stumble in Big 12 play, then Fine has a real shot to make it.

The chances of that happening aren’t great, but never say never. I mean, just look at this season for evidence: Most people gave UNT little to no shot to beat Arkansas in Fayetteville, and yet the Mean Green went in there and ripped the hearts out of the Razorback faithful.

The Mean Green will have to defeat Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic and UTSA if they want a shot for Fine to win the Heisman.

Skeptics will continuously point to the Mean Green’s schedule and hold it against Fine, but all he can do is line up under center on Saturdays and do his thing. If Heisman voters determine Fine does not warrant a shot at the prestigious award, that’s just fine.

Fine is having a stellar season for the Mean Green and is on pace to break records. He has led this team to one of the best starts in school history and will look to finish this season strong with a C-USA championship and a bowl game victory.

Who knows — maybe if the stars align just right, Fine will bring the Heisman trophy back to Denton and become  part of history. Fine deserves some Heisman recognition, despite him not playing as tough competition as Alabama or West Virginia.

Fine has a tough hill to climb if he is going to win the Heisman, but no matter what happens, everything will be just Fine.

Honestly he should take a redshirt season and transfer to the Big 12. He’s better then anything any of their teams have.
