McCarney lands five-year contract extension with UNT

Reports have surfaced since December of Mean Green football head coach Dan McCarney signing a contract extension with UNT. Thursday morning, the deal was made official.McCarney signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at UNT through the 2018 season. The new deal is worth $3.625 million total.
“It’s great and it’s a strong endorsement of what all of us have done, my whole staff and I have done since we got here,” McCarney said. “I told Lane Rawlins and Rick Villarreal when I took the job we’ll do everything we can to change the culture, make everyone proud of the football program.”
According to Mean Green Sports, the deal will have a base salary of $600,000, but with incentives that number could reach $850,000 per season.
“Would I have like to have done sooner? Yeah I would’ve, and Dan and I had talked about it, but we’ve been in agreement about the terms for quite a while,” athletic director Rick Villarreal said. “It’s just that way we finally got through all the legal hurdles and were able to get that signed today.”
McCarney has won 18 games in his three seasons with UNT. In the first season in Conference USA this past year, he led the team to a 9-4 record, including the school’s third bowl victory at the Heart of Dallas Bowl in January against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
“I love this place,” McCarney said. “I want everyone to really, really be excited and anxious and proud of what we’re doing here as a football program and count the days until we line up and play again in 2014.”
