The Mean Green basketball teams participated in the third-annual North Texas Basketball Madness to kick off the season tonight at the Super Pit.

“It was a lot of fun, we had a great turnout,” head men’s basketball coach Tony Benford said. “I thought our guys were excited coming out in front of the crowd, some of them were nervous.”

The event started off with the women playing a green vs. white scrimmage, which was played at mostly half the speed of a regular game. With two minutes left in the scrimmage, both teams started a small shootout, but the white team managed to get the 22-21 victory in the end.

The men’s team got its chance next to compete in their own scrimmage, also green vs. white.  The green team started out hot, but the white team was able to hold them in the end for a 23-15 win.

“Every time it is a good turnout for us, and I think it will pump us up and we will have a good year,” senior guard Jordan Williams said.

After the scrimmages were over, the teams put on a three-point shooting contest that paired the men and women on teams. In the end, men’s junior guard Todd Eaglin and women’s junior guard Kasiney Williams won the contest with a combined 11 three-pointers made.

In the dunk contest, it came down to a final round between freshman forward Jeremy Combs and senior forward Armani Flannigan. Combs scored a 25.5 in the final round and got the victory because Flannigan could not get a dunk off in any of his attempts.

“It was a fun night, I was just glad to get out with the team and show these fans what they want to see” Combs said.

The evening was also filled with multiple performances by various groups. Phi Beta Sigma performed a step show, and the Mean Green dancers, cheerleaders and the Zooperstars also participated. The Zooperstars are a troupe that consists of animal mascots performing stunts on the court.

“Our marketing department did a terrific job getting the fans here and I thought it was a great group,” Benford said.

There was also free food from different vendors such as Papa John’s and El Guapos, and the Super Pit offered free drinks to all those in attendance.

The Mean Green men’s basketball team opens its season at home on Nov. 10 against Oklahoma City University. The women’s team opens its season at home on Nov. 6 against the University of Southern Arkansas.
