The Mean Green soccer team is returning home after a close 1-0 win against Lamar University (1-3) on Sunday afternoon. The game in Beaumont was called in the 79th minute after a long lightning delay.

The lone goal of the game came off of a Mean Green (3-0) corner kick in the 62nd minute. Junior midfielder Karla Pineda bent the kick around the back post and scored. The scoring play came after an even and deadlocked first half in which the Mean Green had plenty of opportunities to pull ahead, but was unable to take advantage.

“I think it was a really important turning point,” Pineda said. “We had been playing good all game and really needed to find the back of the net.”

Early in the season, each game has tied into a similar theme with the Mean Green offense controlling possession but struggling to finish on scoring prospects. Regardless of the missed opportunities, the offense’s success in keeping the ball on the opponent’s side of the field and getting shots on goal took a lot of pressure off of the Mean Green defense. This  has helped the defense and senior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine to continue their shutout streak throughout the first three games of the season.

“We were able to hold Lamar by keeping our defensive mindset, staying focused, and keeping our eyes on the prize,” Kerestine said.

Sunday’s match was also the second game this weekend to be severely affected by weather after Friday morning’s match at Houston was cancelled due to lightning in the area. In the 74th minute the two teams were sent to the locker rooms where they remained for more than an hour. They then tried to return and finish the game, but were only able to get in four extra minutes before the match was called for good.

“After being up 1-0, had we played another five minutes I really believe we had found our offensive rhythm,” head coach John Hedlund said. “Then everyone had to clear the field and we were in the locker room for a good hour before we came out and tried to play the game before they called it. Even with that we are happy to get the win to be 3-0 and move on to this weekend.”

The team returns home for three straight games starting Friday night at 7 p.m. against in-state foe Abilene Christian University.
