Former UNT football star Johnny Quinn now has his chance to be an Olympic bobsledder.

The Mean Green wide receiver made the USA bobsled team as a pusher and will compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. He decided to make the switch from football to bobsled after an unsuccessful professional football career that was ruined by multiple injuries.

After tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the last game of the Canadian Football League season in 2009, he took advantage of his chance to make Team USA in 2010. In his time with the team, he’s traveled to many competitions in different countries in preparation for the upcoming Olympics.

“I never anticipated being a bobsledder, so it is a sound example in my life of God closing one door and opening another,” Quinn said. “Now I have the opportunity to represent America on the biggest scale.”

In Quinn’s time at UNT, he was a three-time all-conference selection from 2004 to 2006 and set the record for all-time career receiving yards with 2,718 yards. He also was on the track and field team during his UNT career.  His athletic success combined with his criminal justice degree has helped him in many aspects of his life.

“North Texas has prepared me for all the obstacles that life will throw at you,” he said. “I learned a lot of valuable tools and information at North Texas that have really set me up for success as I pursue my athletic venture.”
