Freshman quarterback Mason Fine led North Texas to its first win of the Seth Littrell era on Saturday night, as the Mean Green (1-1) knocked off Bethune-Cookman University 41-20.

North Texas started on the wrong side of the score in the first quarter, when Wildcats (0-1) senior wide receiver Frank Brown took an Eric Keena punt 88-yards to the house for a 7-0 Bethune-Cookman lead.

Junior running back Jeffrey Wilson quickly answered, though, scampering into the endzone from 20 yards out for his first touchdown of the first half. With the extra point, junior kicker Trevor Moore set the new school record for consecutive extra points made. Moore is 62 for 62 in his career on extra points.

Special teams made an impact again, this time positively for the Mean Green. Freshman receiver Tyler Wilson blocked a Wildcat punt, and junior running back Andrew Tucker scooped it up and scored, giving North Texas its first win of the year.

Junior defensive back Kishawn McClain picked off Wildcat quarterback Larry Brihm in the second quarter for his first interception of the season, which led to Wilson’s second first half touchdown that capped off a five-play, 36-yard drive.

With the score, the Mean Green took a 24-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

But North Texas did not rest on its laurels, and came out firing in the third quarter. However, the mood was momentarily dampened when Fine went down with an apparent left knee injury.

Fine’s injury made way for graduate quarterback Alec Morris, who entered the game for five plays. Fine came back in, though, and finished the drive, which was capped off when Tucker punched the ball in from 1-yard out to make the score 31-7.

Morris entered the game again after the Mean Green defense forced a Bethune-Cookman punt, but would fail to get the offense going after he threw a 30-yard pick-six to Wildcat junior defensive back Diquan Richardson to make it 31-13. It was Morris’ fourth interception of the season.

Moore added a 20-yard field goal as the third quarter wound down to make the score 34-13 going into the final frame. Junior running back Willy Ivery capped off a great night on the ground for the Mean Green with a 25-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Ivery finished with 108 yards, and was one of three backs to eclipse 30 yards.

Next up: North Texas travels to Florida to take on the Gators next Saturday.
