The aroma of fresh-grilled burgers and hotdogs will fill the Waranch Tennis Complex for a watch party as the No. 74 Mean Green (12-5, 4-0) takes on the Troy Trojans (16-4, 4-0) today at 3 p.m. for its final weekend in the Sun Belt Conference.

At the watch party fans can enjoy free food, free prizes, a silent auction, free clinics for children and adults and the opportunity to take a picture with Scrappy.

The event starts an hour after the start of the match and will last until 6 p.m. After this event, fans will enjoy a concert from 5000 Bullets – a “four-piece deep funk/soul/groove band,” according to the group’s Facebook page.

All of this is made possible by Game On Athletics – a Denton training facility – which will be at the match today to show off its classes and give away some prizes.

This is the second year this watch party has taken place. Director of fitness and facility manager Angie Maffey said she is excited for everyone to come out.

“We just want to send our message out while enjoying time,” Maffey said. “We want to let others know exercise can be fun. We want to promote a healthy lifestyle.”

The classes are for both adults and kids, with professional trainers to help the clients.

Sports Authority, Red Bull and other companies will also be in attendance.

“It will create a lot of energy and just make it a fun weekend,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “It will be a great send off. Our whole team is based on family and this whole weekend is about our Mean Green family.”

In its last four meeting with the Trojans, the Mean Green team has come out on top.

Senior Valentina Starkova said she remembers the Trojans fighting hard to defend their home court last season.

“Last year it was a lot harder to play,” Starkova said. “We were playing at their courts, their home, but this time it’s at our house and we have to protect it.”

Middle Tennessee

On Sunday the Mean Green will take on the Blue Raiders (10-9, 3-1) at the Waranch Tennis Complex at 11 a.m.

This weekend will set the team up for the Sun Belt Conference championships next week in Lafayette, La.

“I just want to go out there and feel good about ourselves because we have been rained and washed out it’s been hard to get a nice momentum,” Lama said. “Our match with Tyler [Junior College] helped a little bit, but these are our two final rehearsals before the big final exam. This is for us to fine-tune the engine, so it’s ready to go for next week.”
