Coming off of a loss in its previous game against Troy University, UNT is looking for a home win tonight against Florida Atlantic University to gain momentum heading into the Sun Belt Conference tournament.

The Mean Green has struggled at the Super Pit recently, losing its last four games at home.

“We’ve played four good teams, now that’s not an excuse,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “Three out of the four we had a lead in the second half and we just couldn’t finish.”

In the previous game at Troy, the Mean Green failed to control the ball and finished the night with 30 turnovers. Despite scoring 20 points, freshman guard Loryn Goodwin was disappointed with her and the team’s performance.

“I thought I forced a lot of shots in the beginning,” Goodwin said. “Overall, we just didn’t do well as a whole, we played as individuals. And when you play like that, there’s no way you can win.”

Last time the Mean Green (10-16, 9-8) met FAU (11-14, 8-9), UNT lost 79-67, ending the team’s five-game win streak.

“They play a lot of kids who shoot the ball and play with pretty good pace, so it’s not like you can just focus on one or two players,” Petersen said.

Goodwin has scored 20 or more points in the last three games, which hasn’t happened for a Mean Green player since 2001.  She has made 46 three-pointers this season and now leads the conference in three-pointers made.

“At the beginning of the season Alexis Hyder was the go-to, so when people start to key in on her, that leaves somebody open for a three,” Goodwin said. “I’ve been knocking down my shots and working on it to get my percentage up.”

UNT is currently ranked third in the Sun Belt Conference West Division, and FAU is fourth in the East Division. Both teams are coming off a loss, making this next win even more important before tournament play.

The Mean Green hopes three more wins to finish the season will give it a higher ranking, heading into the SBC tournament.

“Everybody on the team has to lock-in on the goal that we’re trying to accomplish,” junior forward Ash’Lynne Evans said. “As long as everybody stays on the same page and stays together as a team, then we’ll be fine.

The game will tip-off at the Super Pit at 7 p.m.
