The Mean Green men’s basketball team got a step closer in the race for a bye in the upcoming Conference USA tournament by beating Florida Atlantic University on the road Saturday night, 78-76.

UNT is one of four teams tied for ninth in the conference. The top nine teams receive a bye in the tournament.

The Mean Green (14-13, 5-8) struggled early and entered halftime with a five-point deficit, but a 10-2 run out of the break helped put the Mean Green ahead for the remainder of the game. FAU (10-18, 5-8) trailed for most of the second half, but got close to tying the score when the team made it a three-point game with just 27 seconds left to play.

After a miss by FAU guard Marquan Botley, Mean Green junior forward Colin Voss was fouled with one second remaining and made two free throws to cement the win for UNT.

I thought we played really well offensively,” head coach Tony Benford said. “We really executed and it was a great team win.”

North Texas had an effective night from the three-point line, shooting 50 percent. It also had a 56.3 percent night shooting from the field. FAU also turned ball over 13 times compared to the seven turnovers the Mean Green had.

Despite the recent five-game losing streak the team went through, the mood is on the rise with this three-game winning streak and the team wants keep riding momentum into the C-USA tournament, beginning March 2.

Yeah we are excited, “I know we had that losing streak earlier in the year, but, we are playing well at the right time,” Benford said.

Voss, who had 10 points, said he believes the team’s best performances are ahead of them.

We felt we hadn’t played our best game yet,” Voss said. “We came out really energized trying to get that win.”

Senior guard Jordan Williams led the Mean Green in scoring with 19 points, four shy of hitting 1,000 in his career. He said he was proud of the win and the team will continue to fix the little mistakes that can get bigger wins.

That was a great win to keep the momentum going,” Williams said. “We got to make the free throws and the key rebounds at the end of the game.”

The Mean Green will continue on its road trip with a visit to San Antonio, Texas and match up against the University of Texas at San Antonio. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 27.
