After a weather delay on Sunday, the Mean Green men’s golf team earned a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams Tuesday at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Ponte Verde, Fla. — ahead of two top-50 teams.

The inclement weather stopped first round play and forced players to finish the first and second rounds on Monday.

“The team played well on a difficult golf course,” head coach Brad Stracke said. “I was very pleased with their finish.”

UNT finished six over par 870, ahead of nationally ranked No. 27 Liberty University and No. 47 University of Tennessee.

The Mean Green started poorly, getting to eight over par in the first nine holes of the tournament. However, the players rebounded and played the rest of the tournament at two under par.

UNT had a 21-stroke improvement in the first two rounds, going from 299 to 278, and had the lowest second round of the tournament by shooting 10 under par and posting a better score in that round than No. 2 Oklahoma State University and No. 6 University of Central Florida.

Junior Jason Roets, who finished tied for sixth overall, shot seven under par 65 in the second round, a new career best at North Texas.

“I stuck to my game plan and hit the ball a little better,” Roets said. “A few more putts dropped.”

Freshman Cory Churchman improved 14 strokes from the first to the second round, and finished the tournament at two over par 230. Churchman said he feels that he has grown and improved as a player in every part of his game, but needs to learn to let the game come to him.

“I was getting in the way of myself,” Churchman said. “I was trying too hard instead of trusting my abilities and letting them do all the work.”

The team has a week off before getting back on the course March 3 to 4 for the Louisiana Tech Invitational held at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La.
