The Mean Green soccer team won their first conference game of the season Friday night, defeating Louisiana Tech University 1-0 at home.

It was the third straight Friday night match that North Texas (7-3, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead into the final minute of play. Unlike the last two contests, however, the Mean Green defense held up and was able to close their opponent out.

With the team’s sixth shutout of the season, junior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine notched her place in Mean Green soccer history and is now in sole possession of the North Texas shutout record.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s a relief. I’ve been wanting it this past three, four, or five games,” Kerestine said before being interrupted by a Gatorade shower from her teammates.

Head coach John Hedlund praised Kerestine’s performance and said that she could go down as the best goalkeeper in North Texas history.

“Tonight we needed her in goal because we couldn’t get that cushion,” Hedlund said. “It’s fitting for her, because she’ll probably go down as the best keeper that’s ever played here, which says a lot.”

Sophomore forward Anna Flobeck scored the lone goal for the Mean Green in the 36th minute, connecting on a header off an assist from junior midfielder Molly Grisham. The goal was Flobeck’s first of the season.

“It felt pretty amazing,” Flobeck said. “I woke up this morning and was like ‘You know, I’m feeling it today.’ It was me and Molly, and we just really connected.”

North Texas were the aggressors in the first half, outshooting La. Tech 10-1. Despite the offense being in sync with a number of smooth moves and passes, the Mean Green simply could not capitalize on their advances and consistently shot the ball just outside the net.

“Right now, the defense is carrying us,” Hedlund said. “We had great looks again. We’re looking back from the sideline and saying ‘Ok, that’s in. We’re up 2-0.’ But it’s not in. They’re either sailing off the line or we’re missing. I think we just need to have a little more composure in the box.”

The Mean Green recorded three points in the standings with their win and will continue conference play on Sunday, when they host Southern Mississippi University at 1:00 p.m.
