The Mean Green soccer team beat Abilene Christian University 3-1 on Friday night to earn their fourth straight win.

Players from both teams consistently went to the ground as both squads played aggressively on both offense and defense. But head coach John Hedlund said that he expects even more physical play going forward.

“This is what we’re going to expect from most teams, with a lot of contact,” Hedlund said. “So we’ve got to get used to it.”

UNT (4-0) Freshman forward Chelsei Soto gave North Texas a 1-0 lead on her first career goal, capitalizing on a favorable bounce after an ACU (2-3) save following a free kick by junior midfielder Jackie Moreau. The newcomer said that scoring her first goal is step one in the process.

“I feel like that was a good start to my freshman year,” Soto said. “But I also feel like I have more to come and I still have a lot more to work on.

Although the game was close throughout the first half, the Mean Green took charge in the second by scoring in quick succession with goals by sophomore forward Marchelle Davis (65’) and junior midfielder Karla Pineda (66’). Abilene Christian responded to the 0-3 deficit in the 72nd minute by scoring the first goal that UNT junior keeper Jackie Kerestine has allowed this season. It was the final score of the match, as Wildcat midfielder Baylee Mitchell squeezed a ball past a diving Kerestine to make the score 3-1.

While UNT’s three game shut-out streak did not hold, the four game winning streak ties their longest from last season after their victory over the Wildcats. But junior midfielder Lindsey Hulstein, who also serves as one of the team’s two captains, stressed that defending their home field is the key to achieving their goals.

“Like our coach said before this game, teams of his that have won championships are the teams that go all season by winning at home,” Hulstein said. “We need to protect our homefield.”

The Mean Green hope to continue defending their turf on Sunday when they host Vanderbilt University at 1:00 p.m..
