Senior pitcher Ashley Kirk cemented her position as one of the best pitchers in Mean Green softball history in the team’s 3-0 win against the University of Texas at Arlington Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.

Kirk shut out the Mavericks and won her 20th game of the season, breaking the UNT single-season record she set last year. In addition to being the most winning pitcher at North Texas with 58 career wins, Kirk set a new record for strikeouts in a season at 188 – breaking the record of 177 strikeouts she set last season as well.

“My entire goal for my senior season was to have fun and that is all I am going to do,” Kirk said. “I am not going to focus on records, wins, losses and I am just going to roll with it.”

Kirk (20-7) pitched all seven innings, threw 12 strikeouts and didn’t allow a run. She said a lot of credit goes to her teammates for not only playing great defense behind her, but to give her some run support as well.

“It shows they will do anything to behind me, so I will do everything I can do keep them off the board and get the win,” Kirk said.

In the bottom of the second inning with two runners on board, sophomore catcher Bryana Wade reached first base on a UTA (16-25, 2-8) throwing error, which let the two runners score and put the Mean Green (28-15, 9-5) up 2-0. Then in the third, senior third baseman Jordan Terry hit a single down the field, which scored junior outfielder Kat Strunk for a 3-0 lead that ended up being the final score.

“It would have been really easy to drop this mid-week game after coming off that high over the weekend,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “I wasn’t disappointed in this. It was a great pitcher’s duel.”

Despite only getting four hits, the team believes the offense is still getting in a good groove.

“We are still putting the ball in play and that is what we are trying to focus on,” second baseman Spencer Ferrell said. “I think we have a good mindset at the plate and we have a lot more energy in the lineup now.”

The Mean Green will now rest for four days before practice returns.

“I don’t want them to think about softball for the next few days,” Kee said. “We will get here Monday and Tuesday and do what we need to do and get revved up for Oklahoma.”

The team will then travel to Norman, Okla., for a matchup with the University of Oklahoma at 6 p.m Wednesday.
