The Mean Green softball team lost 11-5 to the No. 15 University of Washington in the final game of the ASU Littlewood Classic Sunday afternoon. The team went 1-4 in the tournament.

The game was a rematch of Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Huskies. North Texas (3-7) hung around early before falling behind 2-0 in the third inning after two RBI singles off senior pitcher Madison Thompson.

“They just had a few ground balls that happened to be in the right spot,” Thompson said.

The Mean Green offense responded in the top of the fourth with a two run homerun by sophomore utility player Mallory Land to tie the game. The momentum shifted quickly when three consecutive batters reached base to start a five run inning for the Huskies.

“Whenever you play a top 25 team, once you tie it or put some runs on the board, they tend to answer it,” head coach Tracey Kee said.

Things picked up in the sixth inning when junior utility player Taylor Schoblocher and senior outfielder Kat Strunk hit back-to-back solo home runs to cut the lead to three. The blast was Schoblocher’s seventh home run of the season.

“To get two big hits like that got us really excited,” Strunk said.

The Mean Green headed into the bottom half of the frame down 7-5. The pitching staff could not keep the game close late, as sophomore Kenzie Grimes and senior Madison Underwood combined to allow four runs on three hits, and two walks in the sixth.

North Texas has struggled to cash in on scoring opportunities at the plate in the early portion of this season. The team went 0 of 4 with runners in scoring position on Sunday despite an impressive day from the meat of the order. The 2-4 slots of the order combined to go 5 of 11 with three HRs and 4 RBI.

“We just shifted some people around, took some hot hitters and put them on the front half,” Kee said.

Next up for the Mean Green is a five game tournament at the Baylor Invitational in Waco. The first game of the tournament will be against Abilene Christian University on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
