The Mean Green Softball team split its first two games of the season with a dominating win over James Madison University and a loss to the University of Georgia.

In UNT’s (1-0) solid 7-1 win over James Madison (0-1), Kee was pleased with how her team played in her debut game with the Mean Green.

I was excited, it was rejuvenating,” Kee said. “Since I’ve been on campus I’ve asked so much of them, and to see them battle through it was great.”

The Mean Green started slow, but managed to stay in it with excellent pitching by senior Ashley Kirk. She threw 10 strikeouts in her complete game, giving UNT time to make the necessary adjustments at the plate.

At the bottom of the seventh inning, junior outfielder Kat Strunk hit a crucial home run to tie the game at one. She finished with two runs and three RBI.

We were two outs away from hanging this one in the loss column,” Kee said.

From there, the Mean Green took over in the eighth inning with a three home run, six run inning led by senior outfielder Jackie Miller.

The Mean Green’s energy from the earlier win didn’t carry over as the team fell 10-2 to the No. 23 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0).

UNT (1-1) couldn’t get the bats going in the second half of this double-header, only getting three hits with 22 total at bats.

We were looking at pitches we should have swung at, and swung at pitches we should have taken,” said senior infielder Jordan Terry.

There were struggles with pitching as well with three pitchers giving up Georgia’s 10 runs.

Our pitching energy was strong and didn’t carry over,” senior pitcher Lauren Poole said.

Kee didn’t feel like playing a double-header affected her team, and wants to focus on improving the team’s mechanics.

I felt like we played timid and didn’t trust our stuff like we should have,” Kee said.

The Mean Green will continue play in the 7th Annual Red and Black Showcase Saturday with another double-header. The first game will be a rematch against Georgia at 11:30 a.m. Later it will take on Winthrop University at 4:30 p.m.
