The Mean Green softball team began its four-game road trip with a 7-4 loss to the Oklahoma State University on Wednesday.

UNT had beaten OSU 4-3 on March 12 in Denton, which means the teams will split the season series 1-1.

“A lot was different,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “Both teams are a little more seasoned at this point offensively. Obviously, this being on the road made it a lot different versus at home. But I was pleased despite the loss. I was pleased with how our kids competed today.”

UNT (24-15, 9-5) scored a run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by junior outfielder Kat Strunk. However, OSU (22-16) came back and had a four-run second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

“For us, we’ve been badly bitten by the big inning multiple times this year and it typically starts with a walk, followed by an extra base hit and then usually a bomb,” Kee said. “But in that process, OSU is one of the fastest teams we’ve played. They did a really good job of running themselves into that inning, meaning taking extra bases on us with a ball in front.”

UNT scored two runs in the third inning, but OSU countered with three more runs to extend the lead to 7-3. After senior infielder Brooke Foster hit a home run in the fifth inning, but Mean Green didn’t score again.

“We played a really good game today. We had more hits against their No. 1 pitcher than we did last time,” Foster said. “She kind of shut us down last time and we still found a way to win somehow. But I think they found ways to get on.”

UNT registered six hits for the ball game, but left six runners on base. Strunk said the team has to change a little bit about its approach to avoid that happening again.

“There are a couple of times where we were swinging at balls or not really focusing on every single pitch,” Strunk said. “So I would say we need to change that. Just know that we don’t necessarily need a big hit to score people, just timely hits is what we need.”

The Mean Green will continue the road trip with a weekend series against Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. The team will play a doubleheader with Marshall on Saturday and conclude the series with a 10 a.m. game on Sunday.
