The Mean Green softball team began the Scrap Yard Sports Division I Exhibition Saturday morning with a doubleheader against Oklahoma State University in Conroe, Texas. North Texas won game one 5-3, and also won game two 4-0.

Game 1:

The Mean Green (7-9) started the doubleheader on a high note, downing Oklahoma State 5-3. The game was originally supposed to be played on Friday, but was delayed due to inclement weather.

North Texas overcame an early one run deficit to give sophomore pitcher Stacey Underwood her third straight win. Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia got the first of her two saves on the day.

“Sweeping the series against OSU was big for us today,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “It gave us a confidence boost.”

After giving up a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning, Underwood settled down, only allowing one more run before exiting the game in the sixth inning.

“I’m always tough on myself,” Underwood said. “I know I did well today. I won’t say I did great because there are things to improve on, but I definitely pitched a good game.”

Junior utility player Taylor Schoblocher continued her red-hot start to the season, going 4-4 with two RBI’s. Her double in the top of the fourth inning put North Texas ahead for good at 5-1, and was all the Mean Green needed to top OSU.

Game 2

The team completed the doubleheader sweep in game two, shutting out Oklahoma State 4-0.

Senior pitcher Madison Thompson got her third straight win of the season, tossing 3 2/3 innings before being pulled for Garcia, who earned her second save on the day.

“I think all of our pitchers threw the ball well today,” Kee said. “Madison has improved every game and she had yet another good game today.”

North Texas kicked off the scoring in the second inning when junior second baseman Jami Schkade doubled down the left field line. Sophomore utility player Mallory Land and senior first baseman Dani Hoff came around to score on the play, pushing the Mean Green lead to 2-0.

Schoblocher went 2-4 in game two and went 6-8 on the day, driving in two runs and scoring a run. Schoblocher said her sweltering start to year has to do with her confidence at the plate.

“It’s a calm zone,” Schoblocher said. “I go up to the plate every time knowing I can get on base. I don’t like walking or striking out. I like hitting.”

Underwood said Schoblocher has an effect on the rest of the team.

“Having a player like [Schoblocher] in the lineup just makes everyone feel better,” Underwood said. “We all know every time she goes up to the plate she is going to find a way to get on.”

North Texas added two more runs in the sixth inning when junior catcher Bryana Wade homered to center field, doubling the Mean Green lead to 4-0.

The Mean Green will finish the Scrap Yard Sports Exhibition with a doubleheader Sunday against No. 4 Oklahoma. Game one is set to start at 10 a.m. and game two is at 12
