The Mean Green softball team swept its opening games in the Lovelace Invitational tournament, beating Nicholls State University and Southern University on Friday at the Lovelace Stadium in Denton.

Nicholls State

The Mean Green (3-3) beat Nicholls State University (1-6), 8-4 in the first game of the tournament and first home game of the year. Head coach Tracey Kee said the team needs to play better tomorrow, but she was just glad to get her first home win with UNT.

“It was an ugly win, but any coach will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day,” Kee said.

Senior pitcher Ashley Kirk struggled to control the Colonels offense and allowed four runs through three innings. Junior pitcher Madison Thompson came in for Kirk and didn’t allow another score the rest of the game.

“I didn’t think Ashley had her best stuff and I think she would agree,” Kee said. “What I am trying to get this staff to buy into is that if you don’t have your best stuff, go as far as you can and then trust that the pitching change will help us out.”

Junior first baseman Dani Hoff led the team with three hits and drove in four runs, while senior second basemen Brooke Foster recorded three hits and three runs scored. The team overall had nine hits and seven runs batted in.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hoff drove in three runs on a double and put the team up 7-4. Kee said Hoff was the epitome of her message she sent to the team this week, which was to play with high energy and keep attacking.

“We were jittery, playing our first game at home, but once we calmed down we were fine,” Hoff said.

Southern University

The Mean Green (4-3) dominated Southern University (0-4) in the second game of the double-header, winning 9-0.

Senior pitcher Lauren Poole pitched five innings and held the Jaguars to one hit and zero runs. She earned her first win and UNT’s first shutout of the season.

“With Lauren, she had a rough outing out in Georgia,” Kee said. “So for her to go to the bullpen and work on some things mechanically, she did a good job of carrying it over.”

Poole said that playing with a lead helps calm you down knowing that you can pitch with a cushion.

“After my performance last weekend, I wanted to come out here and shut things down and redeem myself,” Poole said.

The big lead came in the fourth inning when the team scored six runs of the nine runs.

“I took kids that were sitting on the sideline for five games and I gave them a chance, and to their credit they jumped at it,” Kee said.

Junior right fielder Jennifer Beardsley and sophomore second basemen Spencer Ferrell hit two-for-three, drove in two runs and scored a run as well. Senior infielder Brooke Foster also had a hit and brought in a run.

“I think we were having a lot more fun in the second game” Foster said. “We will be a lot more loose and ready to jump on them tomorrow.”

The Mean Green will play against the University of Northern Iowa at 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium and conclude the opening round of the tournament. The teams will then be seeded to determine who will play in the tournament championship game Sunday.
