The Mean Green soccer team suffered a bitter loss Sunday afternoon against Texas Christian University 1-0 at home.

North Texas spent most of the first half against TCU (7-3) defending the ball.  Junior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine made four saves in the first half. Each team had six shots, but the first half ended in a scoreless tie.

“I thought we played pretty well. I thought the better team lost today to be honest,” head coach John Hedlund said. “We had two shots on the crossbar and one on the post and we missed a penalty shot. Looking at it, we should have won today 4-1 so we’re feeling a little bit unlucky. We’ve played a tough nonconference schedule and I think that’s going to get us ready for conference play.”

The tables turned during the start of the second half for the Mean Green. North Texas was the aggressor in the half with two shots on goal and one headed from sophomore forward Rachel Holden that went wide right.

“It was a good effort from us today and I got unlucky a couple of times hitting the post but overall we showed a good effort,” Holden said.

In the 61st minute TCU forward Kela Gray scored the lone goal in the game that put the Mean Green in a 1-0 hole.

The Mean Green had another shot on goal, but the shot hit the cross bar and the Mean Green ended up falling. This marks the third time in the last four games that the Mean Green has lost by one goal.

“This game really got us ready for the conference and I think we’re going to go in with a lot of fire since we lost,” forward Amber Haggerty said. “We were connecting pretty well I think it’s because we wanted to win so bad we got ahead of ourselves. After this game we are ready to face any team.”

The team opens C-USA play at home against Louisiana Tech on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
